MAGNETIC PARTICLE INSPECTION (mpi)

Accurate Detection of Defects in Ferromagnetic Materials

INTRODUCTION

At Lateral Wave Pty Ltd, we specialise in Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI)  a proven Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) method used to detect surface and near-surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials such as steel, iron, and nickel. This technique plays a vital role in ensuring the safety, strength, and reliability of industrial components across multiple sectors. MPI is one of the most effective testing methods for identifying defects such as cracks, laps, seams, and inclusions that may not be visible to the naked eye but could compromise structural integrity.

How Magnetic Particle Inspection Works? |

The process involves magnetising the material using a direct or indirect electric current. Fine magnetic particles either dry powder or suspended in a liquid are then applied to the surface. If any discontinuity or crack is present, it creates a leakage field that attracts the magnetic particles, forming a visible indication under white light or ultraviolet light (for fluorescent MPI). This simple yet powerful method helps identify even the smallest imperfections before they lead to costly failures or safety risks.

Applications of MPI

Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) is widely used across industries where the strength, durability, and safety of metal components are critical. It is an essential quality control process during manufacturing, maintenance, and repair to detect surface and near-surface flaws that could lead to structural failure. Whether it’s ensuring weld integrity, checking fatigue cracks in machinery, or verifying component reliability in high-stress environments, MPI provides fast, accurate, and cost-effective results.

Typical Applications Include:

Advantages of MPI

Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) offers numerous benefits that make it one of the most widely used non-destructive testing techniques for ferromagnetic materials. It provides quick and reliable results, helping identify critical defects early while maintaining the integrity of components. This efficiency and accuracy make MPI an essential tool in industries where safety and performance are top priorities.

  • Detects both surface and near-surface defects

  • Quick, accurate, and cost-effective

  • Suitable for complex shapes and sizes

  • Provides immediate visual results

  • Portable — can be performed on-site or in workshops

Types of MPI Methods We Use

Utilising both dry and wet MPI methods for comprehensive defect detection.

Dry Powder Method

Ideal for detecting larger defects and used for field inspections.

The Dry Powder MPI method is best suited for outdoor or on-site inspections where lighting conditions are variable. Fine magnetic particles in dry powder form are applied to magnetised surfaces, quickly highlighting surface and near-surface discontinuities. It’s highly portable and ideal for inspecting welds, castings, and structural components in construction and maintenance environments.

Wet Fluorescent Method

Provides high sensitivity for fine crack detection under UV light.

The Wet Fluorescent MPI method uses magnetic particles suspended in a liquid carrier, applied to the part while it’s magnetised. Under ultraviolet (UV) light, the fluorescent particles clearly indicate even the smallest cracks or inclusions. This method delivers exceptional sensitivity and is ideal for precision inspections in aerospace, manufacturing, and high-integrity applications.
