LIQUID PENETRANT INSPECTION (LPI)
Accurate identification of surface-breaking defects in non-porous materials
INTRODUCTION
Liquid Penetrant Inspection (LPI) is a Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) method used to detect surface-breaking defects in non-porous materials such as metals, plastics, ceramics, and glass. The process involves applying a visible or fluorescent dye penetrant to the test surface. The penetrant seeps into any discontinuities through capillary action. After a specified dwell time, the excess penetrant is removed, and a developer is applied to draw out the trapped penetrant, revealing surface imperfections clearly under white or ultraviolet light.
This method is ideal for detecting cracks, porosity, laps, and seams that may not be visible to the naked eye. LPI provides a simple yet highly effective inspection technique that ensures product quality and structural integrity across a wide range of industries.
How Liquid Penetrant Inspection Works? |
Liquid Penetrant Inspection (LPI) works on the principle of capillary action. A penetrant liquid is applied to the surface of the test material and allowed to seep into any open-to-surface defects such as cracks or pores. After a set dwell time, the excess penetrant is carefully removed, and a developer is applied. The developer draws the trapped penetrant out of the flaws, making them visible under appropriate lighting. The result is a clear indication of any discontinuities that could compromise structural integrity.
Applications of MPI
LPI is widely used across industries where the detection of surface defects is critical to safety and performance.
Typical Applications Include:
Aircraft components such as turbine blades and landing gear
Automotive and marine parts
Castings, forgings, and pressure vessels
Advantages of LPI
Liquid Penetrant Inspection offers a cost-effective and versatile method for identifying surface discontinuities with a high level of accuracy and visibility.
Types of LPI Methods We Use
To ensure comprehensive inspection results, we utilise both Visible Dye and Fluorescent Penetrant techniques, selected according to material type and defect sensitivity requirements.
Visible Dye Method:
Ideal for field inspections where UV light is unavailable; provides clear red contrast under white light.
The Visible Dye Method uses a red or coloured penetrant and is inspected under normal white light. It is ideal for field applications or environments where ultraviolet light is unavailable. This method provides a strong colour contrast against the white developer background, allowing easy identification of surface flaws such as cracks or seams.
Fluorescent Penetrant Method:
Offers superior sensitivity and visibility under UV light, suitable for critical components requiring precise flaw detection.
The Fluorescent Penetrant Method employs a penetrant that glows under ultraviolet (UV-A) light, offering enhanced sensitivity to even the smallest surface defects. It is widely used for high-precision inspections in industries such as aerospace, manufacturing, and power generation, where early defect detection is critical for safety and performance.
